Who is this course aimed at?
This
is a Radiation Protection Supervisor course for those involved in
industrial X-ray or gamma radiography for non-destructive testing.
This course will satisfy the training requirements for RPSs set
out in the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (IRR99). Those
attending should have some practical experience of industrial radiography.
What
is the course about?
This
course provides attendees with an understanding of practical radiation
safety in relation to X-ray and gamma radiography carried out in
enclosures, under 'open shop' conditions, and off site.
What
are the benefits of this course?
Those
attending this course will:
- Learn
about the nature and origins of X-ray and gamma radiation and
the terminology used in radiation protection;
- Realise
the significance of potential doses, the health effects of these
doses and the importance of keeping all exposures as low as reasonably
practicable (ALARP);
- Understand
the basic principles and measures that can be taken in practice
to restrict exposure to ionising radiation, and the importance
of adhering to written procedures;
- Understand
the legislative requirements of working with sources of ionising
radiation and transporting radioactive materials;
- Become
competent in using a radiation monitor to assess the radiation
hazard and understand the significance of measurement results;
- Understand
the role of an RPS in ensuring the local rules are adhered to,
that necessary checks are carried out and records kept; and
- Understand
how accidents can be prevented and practical steps to take in
the event of an emergency.
Course
overview
The
course runs over 2 days and comprises of interactive talks, group
exercises, and covers all necessary legal and practical requirements.
Discussions of real life situations and case histories help put
the material into context and re-enforce learning.

venue
This
training course is presented by an accredited HPA Radiation Protection
Adviser at the Talon NDT training facility in Aberdeen.
